Sharing Custody During the School Year

Summer break has come to a close, and your kids are back to school, which often means hectic schedules for children and parents alike. If you share custody of your children with their other parent,it is important to have a healthy and practical schedule and stick to it. The following are some tips for sharing custody during the school year.

Collaborate the Schedule

You should be clear on which days and nights you are responsible for your child, and the same goes for their other parent. On those days, one parent will be responsible for transportation to and from school, activities, and more, so the child’s schedule should be clear to everyone. Making a shared calendar – perhaps color-coded – can help everyone stay on the same page, so your child is never left without a ride or parental help.

Keep Communication Lines Open

Things happen, and a parent’s schedule might vary one week. If you or the other parent has a problem getting your child to school or an extracurricular activity, it is important to discuss these complications and find a solution together. It is critical that these conversations stay between the parents, so the child never feels like a burden or a complication.

When in Doubt, Refer to the Parenting Plan

As part of your initial custody case, you should have agreed to a detailed parenting plan regarding schedules, activities, and more. If you have any questions or concerns about a particular obligation, first refer to the parenting plan, which hopefully has the answers. If you need a modification of your arrangement, do not hesitate to speak with a child custody lawyer in Southfield.
